Why Rereading Is Ineffective
Rereading feels like studying, but a fact with nothing to connect to fades fast. Here is what actually makes learning hold.
You read the chapter once. You go back over it with a highlighter, and the second pass feels smooth and familiar, almost easy. You close the book convinced you know the material. A week later, when you actually need it, most of it is gone.
That gap, between how well you knew something at your desk and how little you can recall later, is the quiet failure at the center of most studying. The habit that produces it is the one nearly everyone reaches for first: rereading.
I did not question rereading until I read Make It Stick, a book by the cognitive scientists Henry Roediger and Mark McDaniel, written with Peter Brown. Its central claim landed hard, because it named the exact thing I had been doing wrong for years. Rereading and highlighting are the most popular study methods in the world, and they are close to the least useful. When researchers ranked ten common study techniques, rereading sat near the bottom.
What replaced it, once I took the idea seriously, was not just a different technique. It changed how I think about what memory actually is.

The illusion of fluency
Rereading works on your confidence, not your memory. The second time through a page, the sentences are familiar, and the brain reads that familiarity as understanding. Psychologists call this the illusion of fluency. The material feels known because it is easy to process, and you mistake the ease for durable knowledge.
The trouble is that recognition and recall are different skills. On the page, you only have to recognise an idea when it appears in front of you. In the exam, the meeting, or the real conversation, nothing is in front of you. You have to produce the information from a blank, and recognition is not recall. Rereading leans on the first and does little for the second.
This is why the confidence rereading gives you is such a poor guide. Learners who reread tend to rate themselves as well prepared, then underperform when tested. In four experiments that compared rereading against a single reading, the extra pass barely moved test scores. The effort was real. The learning mostly was not.
Why information disappears when it has nothing to hold onto
Here is the part that reframed everything for me. Memory is not a warehouse where you drop facts and hope they stay put. It behaves more like a network. A piece of information survives to the degree that it is tied to other things you already know. Connected facts hold each other in place. Isolated facts drift, and drifting facts fall out.
Picture each new idea as needing a hook, something already in your head to attach to. Learn a Spanish word by linking it to a word you already know, a sound, an image, a sentence you would really say, and you have given it several hooks. Learn it by reading the vocabulary list four times, and you have given it none. The word sits there with nothing to hold it, and by next week it is gone.
A fact with no connections is a fact with nothing to hold it in place.
Rereading fails at exactly this. It adds exposure, another pass over the same words in the same order, but it does not add connection. You are not building links between the new material and the rest of what you know. You are looking at it again. Exposure without connection is why the forgetting sets in so fast.
What building connections actually looks like
The forgetting curve, first sketched by Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s and measured again in controlled experiments more than a century later, shows how steep the drop is. Learn something today, and without reinforcement most of the detail is gone within days. Rereading tries to fight that curve by piling on more exposure at the start. It does not work, because the curve is not caused by too little exposure. It is caused by too few routes back to the information.
The fix is to practise getting the information out, not putting it in again. Close the book and try to recall what you just read, in your own words, before you look. That single act, known as retrieval practice or active recall, does something rereading cannot. Each time you pull a fact out of memory, you strengthen the path to it and you connect it to the cues that helped you find it. You build the hooks by using them.
The evidence here is not subtle. In one study, students either reviewed material with elaborate concept maps or simply practised recalling it, and the recall group remembered substantially more a week later, even though the concept-mapping group felt more productive while they worked. Retrieving beats reviewing, and it is not close.
Why spacing multiplies the effect
Retrieval builds a connection. Spacing makes it stick.
Recall something once, right after learning it, and you reinforce it a little. Recall it again a few days later, after you have half forgotten it, and the effort is harder and the payoff is larger. Each well-timed retrieval, spaced so that you genuinely reconstruct the information rather than echo it, deepens the hooks further. This is spaced repetition, and it is the opposite of the cram-and-reread pattern most of us fall into.
The two techniques compound. Retrieval builds the connection, and spacing schedules the retrievals so each one lands when it does the most good. Rereading has neither property. It is the same material, at no particular interval, recognised instead of recalled.
How to actually study this way
You can drop rereading as your main method starting with your next session. The replacement is not complicated.
First, read the material once, properly, for understanding. This is where the case for rereading is half right. You do need to comprehend something before you can remember it, and reading a hard paragraph twice to make sense of it is fine. The mistake is stopping there and calling comprehension memory.
Second, close the book and retrieve. Ask yourself what the main points were, and say them out loud or write them down. Wherever you blank is exactly the material that needed the work, and you would never have found it by rereading, because rereading hides the gaps behind familiarity.
Third, connect on purpose. When you retrieve, do not just repeat the fact. Tie it to something. Ask why it is true, where else it applies, what it reminds you of. Make It Stick calls this elaboration, and it is the deliberate version of the hook-building your brain already does for the things it cares about.
Fourth, space it out. Come back tomorrow, then in a few days, then in a week, retrieving each time. The gaps are the point. If recalling it feels a little hard, the interval is doing its job.
The one hard part
There is a catch, and it is the reason many people abandon retrieval and spacing even after they are convinced these work. The method is easy. The scheduling is not.
One topic is trivial to space by hand. Five topics at once, a language, a course, a book you are working through, a skill for work, and the schedule turns into a mess of what was due when. You lose track. Reviews pile up. A missed day becomes a missed week, and the backlog gets punishing enough that quitting feels like relief. The technique never fails on the merits. The bookkeeping fails first.
That is the specific problem I built Memset to remove. It is not a flashcard app, and it does not want to own your material. Where rereading is fine
None of this makes rereading worthless, and it would be dishonest to pretend so. Reading something a second time is a reasonable way to work through a dense passage the first pass left murky. It helps for getting the shape of unfamiliar material before you dig in, and for a quick refresh minutes before you need something. Rereading is a comprehension tool, and a decent one.
It only fails when it becomes your strategy for remembering. As a way to move information into long-term memory and keep it there, re-exposure is one of the weakest uses of study time, and every minute spent on it is a minute not spent retrieving. Use it to understand. Do not lean on it to remember.
The shift that matters
The change that stuck with me was not about a particular app or a particular schedule. It was realising that learning depends less on how many times information goes in and more on how well it is tied to everything else already in your head. Rereading adds passes. It does not add connections, and connections are what memory keeps.
Once you see studying that way, the reread-and-highlight ritual looks like what it is: motion that feels like progress. The people who still have the material a year later are rarely the ones who read the chapter five times. They are the ones who kept pulling it back out, at spaced intervals, until it was woven into everything around it.
